A Drawing A Day – Week 47

I recieved I gift this week from an old friend which in light of my current project made my heart sink; a small book about 12cm square entitled ‘642 Tiny Things to Draw’.  ARGHHH I’m on my way to my first 365 things to draw and some kind person (you know who you are) gives me another 642!  Things to draw include ‘a pipsqueak’, a dreidel (yes really – definition please anyone?), ‘a glimpse’ and ‘a rolled oat’.  It’s enough to send me into a decline………..however I have a sneaky feeling that I just might give it a go.  Actually I got two unsolicited books as gifts this week and I randomly flicked open the second one and opened it at a chapter entitled Pure Gratitude, Infinite Thankfulness, very apt and appropriate to my intention to focus more on the glass half full than the glass half empty.

A Drawing A Day – Week 46

My apologies for moaning on in the last two posts…….I have much to be grateful and happy about.  I have food, shelter, family and friends and that is enough and is way more than other people.  I have freedom and health and time and space to practice my art.

A Drawing A Day – Week 45

This is going to be a short post again, I’m not finding much to talk about and I will be repeating myself, I’m boring myself these days.  I’m thinking that my new life does not have a shape or structure yet, the routines and patterns that framed my days have gone and I have yet to make a new pattern.  I used to be strict and have an ‘art’ day a week, no longer; I had a day for housework, gone; a day for sorting through my mountain of photos and making albums, not any more; a day for admin and planning, ha ha you must be joking.  All these (boring) routines went when we started packing back in April and I have not been able to establish them again.  Spontaneous?! what me? No way, I need a framework to hold me together because I find it all too easy to fritter away my time.

A Drawing A Day – Week 44

It has been tough this week to remain motivated, it’s almost as though with the finishing post in view I can’t be bothered anymore.  I started the year with excitement and trepidation not sure if I could do it. During the year the project was a constant thing that I hung onto in a time of change, it was a punctuation point of every day, a sense of achievement every day.  Now it feels more like a chore; guess I am having a bad week.  Ignore me………..

I cracked out the serious charcoal this week! What fun, I had forgotten; I have been fiddling around with charcoal wrapped in a pencil – ha, that’s for wimps.  I now have a box of willow charcoal which comes in virtually weightless slender twiglet shaped pieces of blackness.  Thanks to Ed (my life drawing teacher) who got us to use tone this week I have felt very ‘artistic’ and getting very dirty.

A Drawing A Day – Week 40

Mabel the Tawny Owl

Mabel the Tawny Owl

There was much interest last week in Mabel, so I have cropped the photo and put the enlargement in this week.  She is about 12 inches tall I guess and this is her regular daytime roost.

Things must be settling down as I am finding more time for drawing which is good, I am also finding that I would like to do more time intensive stuff – maybe larger drawings or more detailed or pictures that take more than a couple of hours to complete.  But it will have to wait…..

A Drawing A Day – Week 39

In our old place when we walked we became accustomed to Buzzards shrieking overhead and looked forward to seeing ‘our’ Buzzard who sometimes came very close.  Now we have moved into town we have a new bird friend to enjoy.

Mabel in Christchurch Park

Meet Mabel the resident Tawny Owl who lives in this tree, she can be spotted most mornings looking down on us all as we go about our business.  The grass where everyone stops to look has worn away and she is a local celebrity.  I believe she has reared chicks for the past two years.

A Drawing A Day – Week 38

Finally this week all our possessions have been gathered together again under one roof so to speak.  With the collection of the hand cart (don’t ask!) from its temporary resting place we can now see the full size of our stuff problem.  It is not as bad as I thought and over time the stuff will be tamed and cut down in size.

Well my colour mojo is back, now that my table is set up and my coloured pencils are out I have no excuses.  My coloured pencil skills have become a little rusty but it is such fun to be in colour again.
